Building New Credit

In some cases after the credit repair process, if all you had were negative listings, you might end up with an empty credit report.

Not too good if you need a loan, but there are a few things that you can do to correct that situation.

Open and maintain a checking account in good standing.
When you keep your checking account properly, creditors will see that you are able to manage money responsibly.
Your checking account information is not reported to the credit bureau unless you have bounced checks or have some type of default.  Having a checking account with no negative records is a good way for the lenders to see that you are responsible in managing your money. It is also a good idea to establish a good relationship with your banker in the event that you want to apply for a loan in the same bank where you have your account

Piggyback on someone with good credit.
Your partner or relatives with good credit may want to help by adding you as an authorized user on one or more of their accounts.  This is by far the best and fastest way to start new credit.  After a couple of months, you can apply for your own cards or loans.

Open new credit for people with bad credit or no credit file.
There are options where you can establish new credit regardless of your credit history. These products are great ways to take control of your credit.

Open a department store card.
This is a good way to establish new credit. Whatever department store you choose, ensure that the department store reports to the credit bureaus.

Consider secured credit.
You do not need good credit to open these type of accounts.  It is a good way to start adding good items on your credit file.  When a credit card or loan is secured, it means that there is an asset linked to the account that the lender can take if you fail to make payments.  You could obtain a secured credit card with a $600 limit if you put a $600 deposit in the bank that is linked to the card.  If you fail to make your credit card payments, the bank takes your deposit.

Charge purchases and make payments on time.
Make purchases with your credit card and make sure you make at least the minimum payments on time.  Once you have made several purchases and paid on it responsibly for at least 6 months you may want to apply for a major credit card such as Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover.
